Wi-Fi Alliance predicts 500 million Wi-Fi phones in 2014

According to this Information Week article the Wi-Fi Alliance predicts that there will be 500 million Wi-Fi enabled phones shipping out in 2014.  It appears that the market for the Wi-Fi enabled phone is growing rapidly and according to Wi-Fi Alliance CEO, “the phenomenal growth of handsets offering Wi-Fi is no surprise”.

It seems as though cellphone consumers, device makers and carriers are all seeing the benefit of the Wi-Fi enabled handset.  Consumers benefit from faster data transfer speeds, clearer voice calls and are even able on minutes and international calling fees (Cell-Fi™).  Carriers see the benefit in the Wi-Fi enabled device as an aid for offloading the heavy data use that is clogging the 3 and 4 G networks and device makers are able to satisfy a rapidly growing consumer demand.
