Miami, FL Residents experience poor service on new muni network

January 23, 2010

I just read an article on Wi-Fi Net News citing the Miami Times as being critical of Miami’s new 5 million dollar network that is intended for both municipal and [free] public use.  The service is said to be “shotty” and the network came at a very high price to tax payers.  In fact the Times article is titled “Why are Miami Beach Taxpayers Spending %5 Million on Wi-Fi That Doesn’t Work?”.  That raises a lot of questions about current technology and the quality of such community networks.  We have become so used to “hyper-speed” Internet, that slow will not do and being offline is simply unacceptable.  On the other hand, who wants to pay the huge cost of cable internet, be wired down and get locked into fine-print contracts?  After all, it seems that we now depend on Internet and information just to get by – that we shouldn’t have to pay a lot to get it and should not have to be tied to desk.

We think we have found an answer.  Residents of Cite and New Wave Condos in Miami – we have a solution for you.  Spot On Networks offers Community-Wide Wi-Fi and Cell-Fi Networks at your complexes for prices as low as $19.99 per month and non-contract plans available as well.

What is the “Wi-Fi Revolution”?

January 7, 2010

At Spot On Networks – we talk about this.  A lot.  What is the “Wi-Fi Revolution”?  Most of us know what Wi-Fi is and it has become an important part of the way that we function in our everyday lives.  A couple of years ago the concept of sitting at your laptop, not wired to an outlet was amazing – then the idea that you could do this in your own home with a personal router was even more liberating – but it’s not enough.  We want more.  Many of us are attached to our laptops, netbooks and Smartphones – the idea that we may loose service, connection or signal at any time is not okay with us.

The “Wi-Fi Revolution” is a new Wi-Fi.  The idea that we always stay connected – Wi-Fi is not just for laptops anymore.  Now, with the development of Cell-Fi technology, we never have to be without service on our Smartphones either.  Wi-Fi is no longer a novelty – it is an expected amenity wherever we are – be it a restaurant, hotel, apartment building, mall, outside, even in a plane: Give Us Our Wi-Fi!

I was listening to an NPR segment yesterday and heard a hilarious guest speaking about in-flight Wi-Fi.  The flight attendants announced “Good News!  We now have in-flight Wi-Fi” and the audience cheered.  The Broadband Properties Wi-Fi Forum speaks in it’s latest post about how in Multi-dwelling units “residents can put up with a lot of things: a leaking toilet, AC being down for a while, no hot water, and yes they are mildly annoyed but as long as they can surf the internet, they cope. BUT if the internet is down or slow, all hell breaks loose.”  Wi-Fi Internet is a part of our daily lives.

The “Wi-Fi Revolution” is about developing the best possible Wi-Fi technology for today.

Forget the “creative solutions” for your 3G service – Wi-Fi is the crystal clear answer

December 31, 2009

I was fascinated when I read this article on the New York Times technology blog describing “creative solutions” to at&t’s ever growing issues with data gridlock on the 3G network.  The blog mentions everything from rearranging furniture to setting up a “phone booth” by the window in an office building so at&t Smartphone users can get better phone reception and less dropped calls.  Currently there are over 200 posts, most with various complaints of at&t cell service in apartments and corporate buildings.  These service issues are being reported all over the U.S., especially in areas such as New York city.  This is especially close to home for Connecticut residents as many of us work in New York offices and experience the at&t dead zones in high rises.

Spot On Networks has come up with a REAL solution: Cell-Fi. Cell-Fi users can use their Smartphones over the Spot On Network for faster data transfer and better coverage throughout all areas of the building/ property.  Wi-Fi for your Smartphone – not just for Internet, but for calls as well.  Some Smartphone users will be able to save cell minutes while making calls over the Wi-Fi network and save big on phone bills and international calling bills.

Read Spot On’s CEO Dick Sherwin discuss why all major cell carriers are going to run into service issues with the ever growing demand put on networks by high data usage and what his solution is.  This post is Mr. Sherwin’s response to the NYT article:

“The difficulties users experience with the iPhone in dense cities populated with large apartment buildings and complexes stem from the physical characteristics of the frequency band utilized to provide voice and data communications. All of the major carriers either are, or will, experience the same problem. Two of your commenters correctly identified solutions — femtocells or the use of T-Mobile’s UMA approach. Both of these options are “indoor” solutions that provide indoor transmission of frequency. However, like any other random solution, as more users select these options, interference will be created within the building. Our company, Spot On Networks, partners with the apartment owners in cities such as New York, to provide an integrated Wi-Fi and cell solution so that users of Smartphones, like the iPhone, not only get decent signal strength, but have much greater capacity for data transmission and surfing without having to purchase a femtocell. As more and more users decide upon the use of Smartphones for both voice and data, we believe that we have developed the right integrated approach to satisfy residents of apartment buildings in dense cities.”

What’s CALEA all about?

December 28, 2009

CALEA: It’s an important topic. You may have heard about it and are wondering what old phone taps have to do with Wi-Fi.    The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act was passed in 1994.  Simply, and for the technologically faint-of-heart, the CALEA act requires that goverment agencies have access to tapping your phone (*yikes*, right?).  Well, enter the digital age.  In 2004, those agencies began to realize that traditional phone tapping methods were more difficult, expensive and sometimes not even possible with digital communications.  In 2005, the government began to include “communications that pass over the internet” as subject to tapping.

If you own or manage a hotel, restaurant, condo complex, etc. and provide Wi-Fi – you MUST read this! Having a network on your property that is CALEA compliant can save you time, money and a lot of aggravation.  If your not providing you Wi-Fi as amenity – you should!  Wi-Fi (especially with the Smartphone revolution) is quickly becoming the most important amenitity to have…anywhere.   Find out more.
